Rental Cars - Redesign
I was given a short design task by rentalcars.com to use my UX/UI design skills to redesign how to filter through the vehicles on their webpage. I designed the search function to have three tabs, a general search, search by brand and also the main new feature of using a chat bot which would communicate with the user picking out key words to pair them with their ideal rental car.
I started my design process by researching into the existing filter system on rentalcars.com. What I liked was the ability to directly search for car hire as soon as entering the site however I felt like some important information was missing such as price range, disability requirements and the option to select automatic or manual.
To gather user feedback on the existing system I gave users an SuS test to fill in and a questionnaire that I had created. The existing system showed to be already quite user friendly however feedback showed that things can be improved such as filtering to a specific car make.
Researching into other car rental competitors I looked at how their filter systems worked. A lot were similar to rental cars but Orbits stood out to me. Orbits give a more in depth filter option upon entering the website making it easier for the user to reach an end goal. This filter system could be improved by further expanding the information available.
I sketeched out some quick rough ideas to get my design process going, I made sure to only spend a few minutes on each sketch so I could keep generating further ideas.
Before making a high level prototype I created a wire frame mock up which I would use to test on users before further developing.
I created the prototype with an alternative colour scheme to try out a more effective design. I thought this design was really eye catching and clear however it didn't fit with the overall brand so I decided to use the brands colour scheme.
I redesigned the search box by separating it into three tabs. The first tab is similar to the existing search feature but has added filter features like changing from automatic or manual.
The general car search results will display further filter options at the top of the results. The allows for the user to the filter through the results easily rather than having to navigate further to find the filter section.
This tab is for users who only wish to drive a specific car make or model. They are able to search directly for the brand making it easier to reach their end goal.
The results for brand search will display just that car brand, the user can then filter this further similar to general search.
The car guru is the main new feature I have created for the system. It's inspired by my previous research into chat agents which are shown to be persuasive to users. It works by asking the user questions related to the car they are looking for and picks out key words that will match to certain rental cars. This method helps users reach an end goal in a much more user friendly way.
The car guru will display the rental car best matching the users requirements and offers the option to book it with the information the user has supplied. The guru also asks for feedback which the user can give by replying in the chat box.
